The Treasurer’s office keeps records of all receipts and disbursements of Township funds, with the majority of time spent on the collection of taxes. The Buchanan Community School District, Lake Michigan College (LMC), and the Berrien Regional Education Service Agency (RESA) pay the township a per parcel fee to collect the taxes they levy during the summer cycle (July 1 – Sept. 14). The State Education Tax (of six mills) and the County general tax are collected in the summer cycle as well. The taxes levied by the Township and other taxing entities are collected during the winter cycle (Dec. 1 – Feb. 14). In 2017 approximately 2500 tax bills were mailed to Buchanan Township property owners. The Treasurer’s office also issues dog licenses on behalf of the Berrien County Animal Control department during the winter cycle and works closely with Buchanan Township Assessors Nancy Williams and Angela Story and the Berrien County Treasurer’s Office all year through.
